This is a departure checklist for an offshore or ocean
passage.
(I) PRIOR TO DEPARTURE DAY:
- Check thru-hulls, hoses and clamps
- Check rigging and sails
- Check winches
- If appropriate change oil, replace fuel filters and check engine per
schedule
- Check maintenance schedule and do any other overdue items
- Check inventory and buy necessary spare parts, batteries, etc.
- Provision for all non-perishable items
- Do
passage planning
- Check electronics
- Check all safety equipment
- Check jacklines
- Fill butane bottles
- Track weather to identify
window
- Fill up with Diesel
- Fill water tanks
- Do laundry
(II) DAY BEFORE DEPARTURE:
- Provision for perishables
- Clear out of customs and immigration
- Take down awnings
- Haul and stow the dinghy and outboard motor
- Check navigation lights
- Charge the handheld VHF
- Check deck tiedowns
- Review weather forecast
- Radio checks on VHF and SSB
- Top up fuel and water tanks and jerry jugs
- Check engine oil and coolant
- Check Generator oil and coolant
- Put snap shackles on gas locker latches
- Make up sea berths with sheets and pillows and rig lee cloths
- Stow everything below except what's needed during the passage
- Stow the secondary and stern anchors and cover their chain hawses
- Ensure everyone is allocated a life jacket, & lifeline and that they
are armed and fit
- Ensure everyone is familiar with the location and operation of the
safety gear
- Liferaft
- Life-jackets & rules
- EPIRB's, Flares & Fog-horn
- Dan-buoy, Lifebuoy & Throwing Line
- Bilge pumps & buckets
- Fire extinguishers & fire blanket
- Jackstays
- Wooden bungs & window boards
(III) DAY OF DEPARTURE:
- Ensure cockpit cover and support hoop are stored
- Unlock the life raft
- Put valuables in the Grab Bag
- Review weather forecast
- Fill thermoses with hot water
- Prepare passage food
- Make galley & Gas sea-ready
- Secure the table leaves
- Bring out Life Jackets and tethers
- Fit the dan-buoy/Life buoy, Rescue Buoy and Throwing Line
- Fit External EPIRB
- Uncover the compass and remove instrument covers
- Check bilges
- Close and secure hatches and portholes
- Reset GPS Trip Odometer
- Check on deck and ensure ends of all lines are secured
- Remove any halyard ties
- Ensure Guard Rail gateways are closed
- Haul down courtesy flag and prepare Q flag and new courtesy flag
- Hoist the Ensign
- Bring out
Deck Log, charts, and
Navigator s Notebook
- Ensure the General, motor, bow thruster, & winch breakers are on
(Battery Locker)
- Turn on the VHF and put remote in cockpit
- Turn on GPS & Chart plotter, instruments etc.
- Make departure entry (all except time) in the Deck Log
- Turn on the engine & check water is coming out.
- Up anchor, unmoor, or leave the dock
